A Brief History
The American Lacrosse League was founded by Terry Wallace and Bruce Meierdiercks, former teammates at Adelphi University.
After the fourth week of play, the league decided to shut down the Rifles. They felt that operating a team in Denver was too expensive for the league, which had five other teams all based in the Northeast. Wallace said that the cost of operating a team in Denver accounted for 35-40% of the six-team league's budget. "Basically, the financial drain of Denver was such that we had to cut off a finger to save a hand," Wallace said.
Ultimately, suspending operations of the Rifles had no effect on the league, as the American Lacrosse League folded after the fifth week of play.
